What is Periodontology (Gum treatment)?

Early detection and treatment of gum disease is vital to support both oral health and general health.

Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that examines the structure of soft (gingiva, periodontal ligament) and hard tissues (bone, cement) surrounding the teeth, the diseases occurring in these tissues and the treatment of these diseases.

A healthy gum has a pale pink colour, a rough appearance similar to orange peel and a compact (tight) structure. In cases where oral hygiene is not given enough importance or proper brushing is not performed, the food taken accumulates on the tooth surface, and with the effect of saliva, it causes deposits called dental calculus, which cannot be cleaned with a toothbrush. Dental calculus contains intense bacteria. The source of gum diseases is these bacterial infections. It starts with the bacterial plaque on the tooth causing inflammation in the gums.

Gum diseases may affect only the tooth or the gum surrounding the teeth or, in more advanced cases, the tooth root, the jawbone around the tooth root or the fibres connecting the root of the tooth to the jawbone. Periodontal disease, which starts with swelling and bleeding in cases where only the gums are affected, can cause bone resorption in progressive cases, causing the teeth to spacing, elongation, shaking and even tooth loss. At the same time, it prevents prosthesis treatments to be performed by creating an unhealthy infrastructure. Periodontal diseases can be treated by cleaning tartar and inflamed gum tissues.
